Here’s the procedure on how to move a wordpress blog to a new server. Its actually the same procedure to move a topsite or any other website.

I ran into a major problem when adding my MsMoneyGirl Topsites to a new dedicated server.

Error
You probably tried to upload too large file. Please refer to documentation for ways to workaround this limit.

It occurred whilst uploading the database. Apparently, 9MB is much to large!

As a workaround, I broke the file into peices. More distinctly, it was the ats_ip_log table that was super, duper, extra large. So actually the ats_ip_log table was broken into many many peices, then uploaded. This process took many hours, back and forth from wordpad, to ms word, back to wordpad, then to the database.

But here’s a better workaround, put your large database file on your ftp. Then contact your administrator to upload it for you. This was the response I got after calling godaddy support. Only if I knew!!!

Anyway here’s the MsMoneyGirl Topsite link.

Update: January 25, 2007
But then I read - godaddy’s help article, Increasing User File Upload Limits Using php.ini. Its a nice article but I needed to know more to get it done.

How to Increase File Upload Limits
My mission was accomplished after completing the following:

1. Log in to the SSH Connection from the server administration menu in the simple control panel.
2. Type in the command “su - root”. This gave me root access to modifiy the php.ini file.
3. Type in the command “vi /etc/php.ini”. This is the file location for godaddy servers. Note: I found this related information on a tech blog, How to edit php.ini file to increase memory limit.
4. Type “/upload_max_filesize” to find the variable, then type “i” for insert mode.
5. Make the change, press escape, then type “:wq” to save (write and quit).

I’ve moved servers since this post, so a big dump may finally work. Thanks.
