Setting Up Wordpress On A Virtual Dedicated Server from A Shared Hosting Account

I set up the MoreMoneyGirls.net domain on a virtual dedicated server to rid the 503 error and capacity problems that it experienced on occasions on the shared hosting account. I found another person who had a similar problem here.

And to document the procedure…

Of course, there was configuration of the domain in the simple control panel of the virtual dedicated server.

I should have first created a new database for the domain in the control panel of the virtual dedicated account instead of in the phpMyAdmin. It would have created the database for the mySql automatically. No harm done, but it would have been completed in one step instead of two.

It was necessary to export the original database to a file. I always do this using the sql option to create a wordpad file. The newly exported file needed the modifications of changing the database name to the name I decided to use for the new database on the virtual dedicated server, and removing the entire CREATE DATABASE line.

Importing the new file into the new database was next. Then copying files from the ftp of the shared hosting account and moving them to the public_html folder followed.

I even uploaded the latest wordpress version. Yes, it wrote over the files that I copied from the old ftp causing a wordpress upgrade. This always works because you’ll always have your extras like your plug ins, and templates, etc. Those extras are not over written by uploading a new wordpress download.

Lastly, I registered the name servers on godaddy to host them on the new server.

I would recommend getting setup on a dedicated server from the start or as soon as possible before the site gets too large if you’re a innovative webmaster. This will prevent having hosting accounts all over the place or hitting the capacity limits.
